For beginning piano students, I usually begin with the Alfred Prep Course, supplemented with a notespeller to help expedite learning to read music. I also begin ear training, chords, and solo repertoire as the student becomes ready. For voice students, I begin with breathing, vocal technique, and skill-level appropriate songs. I have no expectations of my students until they show me what they're capable of. After our first two lessons, I start to really stress the importance of practicing on their own time as well. Singing is part muscle memory and your muscles can't memorize what they aren't consistently doing! I use a very kinesthetic approach to my teaching in that I focus on how the entire body feels when my student is singing the correct way versus how it feels when they are singing incorrectly (unhealthily).
