Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn and practice more. Although working through the books and going onto the next level is the goal, I find it imperative ensure that the techniques are being fully utilized along the way. I believe in being very structured with young students, as children thrive on structure. I give precise weekly practice assignments and expect the parents to be involved with their child's practicing. For adults, I like to have them set the tone as to what they want to work on, as adults have goals in ways that children do not. I have been sightreading music once before I could read English, and I am well-versed is several different sets of training booklets for piano.
