I love to see students grow and develop their gifts, and it is important that students are treated as individuals who learn at their own pace. I encourage goal-setting by the student in addition to my goals. This helps a student know what he or she is working toward, which I've found to be helpful especially in the knitty-gritty moments of learning how to play. Setting goals also gives students the chance to achieve milestones throughout the process and define their success as musicians, making them eager to continue on in the process of learning. There isnt anything more rewarding to me than seeing all of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My teaching experience dates back to the early 1990's when I taught as an Adjunct Voice Instructor at Frank Phillips College in Borger, TX. I found this to be a fulfilling and rewarding experience as I taught freshman and sophomore voice students the fundamentals of proper vocal production through the learning of appropriate repertoire. I don't use any one method book. Instead I opt to pull from a variety of sources depending on the students age, background, and skill level. In terms of repertoire, I focus almost exclusively on classical music. While I am a fan of other genres, I also firmly believe that building a solid, classically-based technical foundation is the only way to really become proficient on any instrument. I believe in making teaching fun and tend to try to break larger skills into smaller bite sized pieces that build upon one another. My goal is to allow students to pursue their musical interests while also making sure a solid foundation is being established in terms of the way music actually works (music theory) and what types of motions allow for efficient and safe production of sound (technique).
