I have been teaching as a subcontractor for Encore Music and Musika for the past 5 years while living in Chicago. As well, I have had my own private studio for the past 10 years.
I remember teaching my first sectionals in high school as an upperclassman to my fellow classmates. I've been hooked on the thrill of helping someone succeed ever since. I have since developed my own flute studio, with students ranging in age from 8 to adults, and all abilities, from beginners putting the flute together for the first time, to college music majors. I like to establish good fundamentals, and explain to each and every student exactly why I'm having them do something, and set clear goals in order to achieve whatever personal goals the student has for themselves and the flute.
From a young age I have been an active teacher. Advanced for my age I vividly remember tutoring my classmates in the Fourth grade. Throughout the rest of my schooling I served in some sort of volunteer tutor capacity, helping classmates and younger students. While in undergrad at DePauw University I served as an Orientation/First-Year Seminar Mentor, helping first year students adjust to campus academic and social life. I was employed for 3 years at the local Presbyterian Church as the adult and children’s choir conductor. I also was a music theory tutor for 3 years employed through the University’s work-study program. During my undergrad I also started teaching individual voice lessons. Through the my Master's degree at CCM I kept a small private studio of piano and voice students. I am now up to 26 students and work full time teaching and performing. I value a life full of performing and teaching, both equally important to fulfillment in my professional life. Through teaching I discover more about my own instrument and craft and through performance I have experiences which inform my teaching. I greatly enjoy the variety of students ages, styles, and backgrounds that I teach. I especially love working with beginners of all ages! It is rewarding to see how quickly beginning students make progress and how excited they are with the new experience and personal growth.
Generally speaking, I use a learner-centered approach, encourage astute questioning, a cooperative stimulation of critical thinking, and I prefer an active versus passive teaching style. Regardless of the student's age, I want him/her to have fun as much as possible, so I strive to make the unavoidable repetitive exercises more enjoyable by facilitating the student's creative input. I teach sight-reading and classical guitar using the Sagrares Method, and advise (particularly guitarists) on health and wellness methods developed by Dorothy Taubman. Mel Bay and Hal Leonard books may be used, and I will make suggestions once it is clear what the student's goals and aspirations are. But, I also ecourage the Suzuki Method, listening, transcribing, and composing, in order for the student to more quickly develop an individual style without over-reliance on the written notes, and have fun, active engagement with the creative learning process.
I have been teaching for over 20 years. I have taught at the University level, small mom and pop music stores, large chain stores, as well as my own studio. It is imperative that the lessons are a positive musical experience, and fun for the student. Its my job to motivate and help the student gain confidence and feel good about his or her playing.

Studying music facilitates learning in other subjects such as math and English, helps promote language development, and can even possibly result in increased IQ! Musical activity can also involve a high level of hand-eye coordination and can improve a student's spatial temporal skills while giving them a skill they can have for the rest of their lives. It's important to remember that the biggest benefit of studying music is the development of a lifetime love of diverse types of music.
Musika offers a introductory trial lesson to every student! This lesson gives you the opportunity to meet with your teacher and discuss your lessons with no obligation. If for any reason you are not satisfied we will not charge you for this, and would be happy to match you with another teacher if you would like.
Musika understands that students want to feel safe before having a teacher come into their home, or before going to a teachers studio. Therefore, Musika hand screens all teachers and performs background checks using Intellicorp, a leading provider of screening solutions.
When you take lessons with Musika, you are eligible to participate in our yearly recital held in the Spring. Students of all ages and levels are welcome to perform, and show off their hard work and talent. Live performances are very exciting for musicians, and they help to enhance the students joy and love of making music.
In home lessons are a convenient option for improving your musical skills, and are virtually the same in every aspect as lessons taught in a studio. Lessons are usually taught once a week and significant progress can be made in a short time. Of course, teachers will suggest that students practice every day for the best results.

"I've been taking lessons with Richard for just a little over six months now and all I can say is that he is an amazing instructor. He hasn't followed a set one size fits all script in his lessons but has instead worked with my musical interests and at my pace in a way that is truly valuable. He has also kept things fun, interesting, and engaging even at times when I've felt overwhelmed and discouraged. This is an instructor that is truly adaptable to his students and will make sure that they get the most out of their lessons. I would definitely recommend him to anybody that truly wants to unlock their musical potential."

Very knowledgeable on every aspect of music theory. I listen to recording artists playing various classical pieces, Dan's playing is much like a recording artist's playing. Always on time. Winning happy personality, a great role model. Puts me at ease when I am playing. Have two friends who hold music degrees, I count him a third, something special about the minds and personalities of good pianists. Thanks Dan.

Stephanie is an excellent voice teacher! Our 10-year-old daughter enjoys her lessons with Stephanie each week. She has an amazing way of connecting with our daughter through music. Stephanie knows how to offer constructive feedback in a positive way that keeps our daughter interested and wanting to learn more. I would recommend Stephanie without hesitation.

“I took drum lessons from Mark for about 7 months. I have been playing for 38 years but always thrive to learn more. He was able to provide me alternative exercises and help me gain a better understanding of my opportunities. I have been able to take my playing to another level. His approach to teaching is perfect for any level of student, beginner or advanced. He is a true professional and an outstanding person. You won't go wrong with Mark!” Blaine Vaz

Angela is a phenomenal teacher. She is full of charisma and is a joy to work with. Most of my experience with her has been focused on working in the Alexander Technique and she seems very knowledgeable in this study. I would highly recommend her to any prospective student. I have seen myself improve dramatically in a few short weeks with her guidance (and much practice of course!)

My daughter began learning sax in her school band, but she didn't begin PLAYING sax until she started lessons with Debra. From scales and exercises to actual pieces, Debra coached my daughter with real insight, sensitivity, and patience. Her knowledge of the instrument and feeling for music - along with her easy-going,"kid friendly" personality - make Debra the ideal teacher and musical mentor.

Eduard is an amazing teacher. (Coming from someone who previously knew the basics of playing and music.) He is not to harsh with his words and is extremely nice. Eduard has a great amout of experience and displays it through his teachings. Specifically by making it easy to follow along with his words to actions. As a person with a wondering mind whom is distracted easily, it is easy to pay attention.

Being I'm a woman, I was a little apprehensive having a male teacher (he knew this), however, after my trial lesson I realized he knows what he's doing and I had nothing to worry about!! He is very knowledgable on the piano and vocal techniques. He has a big vocal range so he is able to hit the high notes to be able to show me how I need to sing it. He is also phenomenal on the piano. I would highly recommend him for vocal and piano. Also, I don't know how to sight read music and he is teaching how to. I've been taking lessons with him for a month (my trial lesson was on 1/11) and I have already seen a huge improvement. I am an intermediate level singer looking to improve my vocal technique, breathing and improve my confidence in my singing abilities, Alex is definitely helping me do that.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
