I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method book. There are four books in the series and they are very comprehensive. Once the student progresses to the Intermediate book, I also add Selected Duets Volume 1. I have found that playing duets strengthens listening skills and intonation, plus they are fun! For my string students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements at first, and then I introduce the Suzuki Method for solo repertoire once they have progressed on their instruments. For my vocal students, I find what type of music my student is interested in, and I then recommend a voice book that we will pick repertoire from. For my piano students, I use the Piano Adventures series, which includes the fundamentals as well as solo repertoire. Read More

For younger beginning students, I tend to use more high-energy and captivating method books like Mark Wessels' "Fresh Approach." We will spend a good amount of time on fundamentals to ensure success with at-home practicing. For middle school students, I use more practical methods and techniques that steer them towards high achievement in their school's music curriculum. This would include books like Mitchell Peters' "Developing Dexterity", "Elementary Snare Drum Studies", "Intermediate Snare Drum Studies", and repertoire for middle school honor band and solo and ensemble pieces.
