Instruments: Cello

Originally born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, I have had the incredible privilege of learn from some of the best cellists and cello teachers in the world. I started playing the cello when at the age of 8 in the 4th grade, and immediately fell in love with it. For the past 15 years I have been a student of the cello and it is my life's goal to continue to master the cello and to teach it to others. Read More

It is vital that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I feel just as strongly that every student be using material that they want to learn to maintain interest and to maximize the enjoyment of learning. Folk, Pop, Rock, HipHop, Jazz, Latin, Classical ... the list goes on and on. On signature feature is keeping track of the lesson progress, repertory and artists to gain inspiration. There are as many different teaching styles as there are students. Everyone learns differently, at their own pace. I love private lessons because you can get to know the student and their learning style, and tailor the material to suit them. Its my job to motivate and help them find their own voice as a player. I love doing that! Read More

Instruments: Flute Piccolo

I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method book. There are four books in the series and they are very comprehensive. Once the student progresses to the Intermediate book, I also add Selected Duets Volume 1. I have found that playing duets strengthens listening skills and intonation, plus they are fun! Solo and ensemble pieces are introduced as the student becomes more proficient and various performing opportunities begin to present themselves. Read More

For my string students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements at first, and then I introduce the Suzuki Method for solo repertoire once they have progressed on their instruments. For my vocal students, I find what type of music my student is interested in, and I then recommend a voice book that we will pick repertoire from. For my piano students, I use the Piano Adventures series, which includes the fundamentals as well as solo repertoire. Read More

For younger beginning students, I tend to use more high-energy and captivating method books like Mark Wessels' "Fresh Approach." We will spend a good amount of time on fundamentals to ensure success with at-home practicing. For middle school students, I use more practical methods and techniques that steer them towards high achievement in their school's music curriculum. This would include books like Mitchell Peters' "Developing Dexterity", "Elementary Snare Drum Studies", "Intermediate Snare Drum Studies", and repertoire for middle school honor band and solo and ensemble pieces.
