I love teaching guitar to motivated students. I have been fortunate to play and teach guitar for a living my entire life, and it is still exciting to help students find their voice on guitar. After teaching guitar for the University of Tennessee for 10 years, I moved to Nashville where I was able to tour the world playing music for 12 years. Whether playing a festival for 50,000 people on the side of a volcano in Japan, overdubbing a guitar part for a national Toyota commercial, or helping someone tune their guitar for the very first time, it is still exciting.
I have been teaching for over 20 years. I have taught at the University level, small mom and pop music stores, large chain stores, as well as my own studio. It is imperative that the lessons are a positive musical experience, and fun for the student. Its my job to motivate and help the student gain confidence and feel good about his or her playing.
I supply all of the materials for my students. For beginners, I ask that they choose 5 songs they really want to learn to play. Through those songs, I can introduce many technical and musical concepts. It is very important that this is a positive musical experience. For other skill levels, I assess their skill level and proceed accordingly to help them achieve their musical goals, working with technique and musicality to create a great player.
There are as many different teaching styles as there are students. Everyone learns differently, at their own pace. I love private lessons because you can get to know the student and their learning style, and tailor the material to suit them. Its my job to motivate and help them find their own voice as a player. I love doing that!
