Instruments: Piano Guitar Violin Trumpet Trombone Saxophone Flute Clarinet

My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. Read More

Typically I like to using songs and common chord progressions and incorporate different skills we are working on into songs. This way the student learns a repertoire while learning skills. However this is up for debate and we can cover whatever the student desires. Often times teachers teach a blanket method using certain scales, chords, ect, expecting that this will miraculously result in the improvement the student desires. I am firm believer that this is not the case. Read More

Instruments: Flute

My "teaching style" has evolved over the many years that I have been working with flute students. I am very relaxed. I want you to look forward to and have a good time in our lessons! In that way I know you are enjoying your music. I observe and listen to understand the complete child/young adult before me. I expect regular practice on lesson material, but I also understand the occasional week when other aspects of your life have interfered. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to when I was an undergraduate.  I began giving private lessons to younger college and high school students.  Since then I have consistently taught students privatly either at my studio, at their home, or at a school. While obtaining my Masters degree at the University of Northern Colorado I was a teaching assistant and got hands on teaching experience with big bands and small jazz combos. Read More

Instruments: Violin Viola

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I tailor things to each students age, level and goals. I think anyone is able to learn an instrument and understand that we each learn and approach things differently. Some students are more oral or visual learners. I encourage students to practice at least four days a week and keep a practice log. Young stundents are rewarded by stickers for their weekly practice. Read More

I started teaching occasional private lessons while attending college. Though this started with teaching my friends, it branched out to some strangers as well. After graduating, I started teaching at a lesson studio, maintaining a steady roster of 20-25 students every week. Teaching has definitely helped me develop my own knowledge of my instrument as well! I have found that in addition to simply teaching concepts, talking about my past experiences learning my instrument helps students connect with the material at a deeper level because they can trace a path from where they are to where I am, ability-wise.
