I came to realize that I have a way with students that really brings them out of their shells and gets them excited about learning to sing. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity, on stage and as a teacher, to inspire students of all ages. I am a very passionate vocalist, and I want to show my students how to be as well. I look forward to working with you! Read More

I began teaching guitar lessons informally in college. I learned then that I had a knack for helping people understand concepts and techniques on the guitar. I have had more regular students since my early twenties, from young children to senior citizens. I have taught singers who simply wanted to be able to strum chords; folk and blues fingerpickers; and the occasional lead guitarist in rock, pop or blues styles. Read More

My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. If I was to emphasize anything about learning the art, it would be the understanding of interpretation and how to make any music into something that is uniquely yours. Read More

Nothing is more satisfying than seeing students passionately pursue and succeed in the musical goals they set for themselves. I encourage students to set smaller, individual goals that can help them reach the larger goals they may have. Each student is unique and all students deserve to learn in the mode or format that is most effective. It is my role to both welcome the uniqueness of each student as well as offer multiple styles from which students can learn. Read More

First thing's first: 1) WHAT are you listening to, lately? 2) WHY are you interested in learning music? 3) WHERE do you hope music will take you? This helps me to find out what my student's interests are, and where their passion is. Two beginners of the same age learning the same instrument, for instance, can have vastly goals, interests, and areas of strength. For beginners: scales, simple melodic pieces, and a very basic overview of notation, key, and time. Read More

Instruments: Voice

For beginning students, I focus on the essentials of theory and intervals and combine with the Voice for Life method. Each lesson is tailored to the student's needs and goals, so no lesson is exactly alike in structure. For intermediate to advanced students, I focus on aural (ear) training, sight singing and rhythm and follow it with prepared pieces in order to be "audition ready". For the intermediate to advanced students, I don't use a specific tool for teaching as I feel once you are past the fundamentals of music, everyone learns differently. Read More

Everyone has heard horror stories of music lessons that they were forced to take with teachers who forced students to play music they were not interested in. I whole heartily believe that this is the fastest way to severe a student's relationship with creating music. The musical education process should be one that the student enjoys and wants to nurture to become the best musician they can! Depending on the level of the student and the instrument, I begin with fundamentals such as scales and note names, to foster a better musical understanding, while simultaneously including music that the student can enjoy that ties in with the fundamentals we are currently working on. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
