For a young 11 year old beginner, homework assignments will begin with the instrument itself, and then eventually Book One of any method book desired. Popular practice dictates good results with books like Yamaha and Standard of Excellence. For middle-level ability (middle school / early high school), the Rubank series is perfect. I began teaching guitar at 16 for several local music stores in the Baltimore metro area, and quickly took to working with a wide range students in a short period of time. The passion I developed for teaching the instrument at a young age pushed me to further branch out, and begin offering private lessons from my home studio several years later. In addition to this, I also pursued my own path to learning more about my instrument by attending the Community College of Baltimore County where I earned an A.A in General Studies with a concentration in music. I like to teach without books as much as possible as I feel it allows the student to internalize musical concepts better. The book series I use however is the Rubank method books. These have easy fundamental exercises to help keep the chops in shape and to work on reading music.
