For violin and viola lessons, I start my beginning students off with the violin/viola instrument hold as well as the bow hold. Once one has gotten the feel for holding the instrument as well as the bow, I teach the student the open strings of the instrument, followed by a one octave scale, with basic note reading exercises. I assign method books, etudes (studies), and repertoire appropriate for the playing level of the student. My teaching emphasizes fundamentals first for students of every level. This fundamental study supports students in their pursuit of their musical and artistic goals. The method books I recommend students begin with are in the Rubank series, either Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Etudes to supplement will be the Cavally Melodious and Progressive studies.
