I don't have a particular piano book series I use. I find that most of them present beginning lessons about the same way. I tell very beginning students to only buy the piano book to begin with. If the student continues then I encourage them to purchase the theory and technique books in that level and series. For adults, I let them choose what piano book they want to use. Read More

My musical background is a combination of music performance and music education. As a professional music educator both at secondary Level (middle school high school) and the college level, I strive to focus on the musical aspects of my teaching. Two of my degrees are in Music Education with an emphasis in Performance and I believe in combining both the educational aspects of learning with the performance aspects of learning. Read More

I believe in meeting students where they are at and building their musicianship on the student's strengths. Since I have years of teaching I can help students set realistic goals and know where they need more support and teach them how to be independent in practicing. And it is important to set goals and high expectations to bring students to their full potential. I know how to encourage and reward students with their progress and know how to give feed-back on where they need to lean in. Read More

I love teaching the individual. My first instructor wanted to know about me, my likes and my goals, and that is the approach I like to take for each student, whether they want to perform live, or need to prepare for a college audition, or anything in between. I taught a class of children around the age of 6, and an older class as well for a while at a private school in Arkansas. It was a joy teaching both age groups. I was able to infuse theory and appreciation into learning songs that they loved. Read More

I like to follow a format for lessons, giving a certain amount of time to warming up, practicing technical studies and scales, etudes or lessons, solo literature and ensemble (duet, trio, ensemble) literature. I would encourage students to make an agenda for practicing, I believe many student need to learn how to practice, much like study skills, so they can make good use of their time. I teach students how to mark their music, how to break apart difficult sections and how to set goals for each week. Read More

For my fresh starter students who are children, I make sure they are aware of the best chords for beginners, then teach them how to comfortably move between them, this helps lay the fundamental foundation for guitar. For my adults I first and foremost get to know their musical interest, who their favorite players are. I then based on experience level will guide my instruction to suit my students needs and maintain fun engaging lessons! Read More
