Overview:
I have been teaching over 23 years at all levels and am passionate about helping young people achieve their goals. I have been a flute player for over 30 years and am also proficient in all band instruments, piano, and percussion instruments. I will travel to your home to teach lesson and am organized, punctual, and energetic. I like to play with each student, I think teacher's modeling tone and technique is very helpful for all students. I have taught in student's home and my own home over time and am comfortable doing either, or teaching online.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught private flute studnets since my Graduate School days, in 1994. My studets have reached NYSSMA level 6 and have played at college and scholarship auditions, NYSSMA solo festivals, in-house festivals as well as many other occasions. I know kids are busy and I am creative with using technology and simple "practice smarter not harder" strategies to help a student achieve his or her goals while still maintaining a busy schedule. I enjoyed sports and horseback riding in high school and remind students that they don't have to choose one or the other when enjoying their young lives.
METHODS USED
With every student, I asses the goals of the child before we decide how to move forward. The curriculum for each student will change according to the ability level, practice schedule, and goals of the student. My methods may include purchasing advanced method books or using the student's own method books, I have used several different books and I would use those books as well as my own materials to incorporate a curriculum. I believe in playing duets and solo literature, as well as the student playing what they enjoy playing, if there is music he/she wants to play, I'll encourage students to download such music.
LESSON STYLE
I like to follow a format for lessons, giving a certain amount of time to warming up, practicing technical studies and scales, etudes or lessons, solo literature and ensemble (duet, trio, ensemble) literature. I would encourage students to make an agenda for practicing, I believe many student need to learn how to practice, much like study skills, so they can make good use of their time. I teach students how to mark their music, how to break apart difficult sections and how to set goals for each week.
