For absolute beginners I think it is crucial to address the students interests and influences, and start crafting an approach to learning the basic rudiments and skills that apply to those drummers / bands. As a student becomes more and more skilled I will start switching over to having two drum sets at the space so that a student can see how a beat is played in real time, and also work on setting into the pocket more easily by playing what I am playing. In 2016, I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and was also awarded a Trombone Performance Certificate. I have been fortunate to be able to study abroad in Ireland and perform with multiple bands and orchestras at Maynooth University and around the Kildare County area. I was admitted to Jacksonville University at the age of 16 on a full scholarship, and there I pursued a double major in Music Theory Composition, and Cello Performance. I did my graduate work at Denver University, where I studied a variety of non-western musics, including Balinese gamelan, Ghanaian drumming, and Tuvan traditional music.
