I try to incorporate some form of a goal to achieve, whether its a recital, audition, or just an informal get together with another student. In order to reach these goals its very important to instill proper practice techniques. So for weekly assignments, I have the student's practice scales, finger exercises, and chord changes. I have been directing the childrens choir at my church since 2009, here I develop lessons for students 5-10, each week to get them performance ready for performances once every 2 months. We start by doing proper warm up exercises followed by learning or practicing rudiments. We work on our grip of the sticks and our movements while drumming. In other words, I teach economy of movement for maximum energy. If a student is flailing their arms, we talk about a more fluid movement by utilizing the wrists and incorporating finger control. Then we move on to reading out of instructional books which is then followed by practical application on the drum sets.With a beginner student I find Basix Syncopation for Drums by Alfred Publishing to be a very effective tool. I believe teaching is one of the most important things I can do to 'give back' in music. I've had the great fortune of studying with some of the best trumpet teachers in the world. Being able to share my experiences, the challenges I've faced, and how I've addressed them with the guidance of those teachers and applying that to the specific needs of a student is incredibly gratifying.
