In addition to the Suzuki Method, I like to use etude books, duet books, and sight-reading books for those who are learning how to read music. I teach strictly by the John Thompson Book Series, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Advanced level. I also make it a goal for the student to learn one major classical piece throughout the course of instruction: "Fur Elise" by Beethoven, or "Moonlight Sonata: 1st Movement" by Beethoven.
