Next, I observe the student's playing, in an attempt to determine where the gaps are in their development. I have been teaching voice for almost 20 years now. I have found that it doesn't matter the age if you have a love of singing then you can learn. I have had many students and it's so much fun to watch them learn and grow and find out that everyone has a voice and is capable of singing. Each student is a bit different and part of the fun is learning how to help them move forward whether through vocal exercises, ear training, learning how to breathe or just giving them the confidence they need to sing out loud. On guitar I use the Hal Leonard method and then move into learning blues scales and pentatonic scales for soloing and then move into repertoire they are interested in. On drums, I will teach them rudiments to use when playing as well as play different drum charts to songs they enjoy. My gift is understanding concepts and explaining them in a way people can understand (and adapting it to their learning style). I try to combine the best aspects of the instruction I received on piano and guitar, with useful and practical concepts (and styles) I had to seek out on my own. Typically I work out of the Ernie Ball How To Play Guitar books (Phases 1 and 2), while also incorporating popular songs (including songs the student wants to learn, as soon as they are compatible with his/her skill level). For young beginners I typically with Suzuki Book 1 or the Abracadabra Flute Book.  For children preparing for NYSMA I use the Rubank method with supplements from Forty Little Pieces and gradually move on to more solo repertoire.  For adult students I make repertoire selections based on students' interests while taking care to keep lessons both engaging and fun no matter their starting level.  Although my training is primarily classical, I am happy to incorporate music from other genres into lessons.
