I only teach Intermediate and Advanced students, and my method really depends on the particular student. I don't believe in a single, "core curriculum" for piano-playing. It really depends on the students' goals, strengths/weaknesses, etc. For my beginning intermediate students, I usually give a selection of little pieces to learn by Bach, Schubert, and Schumann to start developing their ear and sense of rhythm/musicality. For beginning students, what I start with generally depends on what instrument they play, but in general, I use various "Essentials" books. As the student progresses past the fundamentals of music and playing their instrument, I will move on to more advanced or technical musical exercises, as well as solo repertoire if the student is looking to perform for a recital, NYSSMA, etc. My teaching style for older, more advanced students is relatively the same, excluding the "Essentials" and fundamentals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Method. I introduce the student to basic instrumental technique on their chosen instrument, whether it be violin or piano. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
