Instruments: Drums
I began to teach drum lessons as a freshman in High School and I haven't looked back since! Teaching has always come naturally to me because my father taught cello lessons at home for my entire childhood . I have combined his teaching styles with my own philosophies, experience and habits throughout my young and extensive musical career. I also have been taking drum lessons since age six from four different drum instructors. Read More
Instruments: Trombone Euphonium
For beginners, the fundamentals are essential to building a strong musical foundation. These include the technical aspects of playing the horn, as well as listening to all forms of music in a concentrated manner in order to enable the student to not just PLAY, but to also LISTEN. Once these fundamentals have progressed, I like to introduce small amounts of music theory so that the student gain a better understanding of everything they play. Read More
Instruments: Piano Trumpet Trombone Euphonium French Horn
My professional experience includes trumpet with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and the Fabulous Fifties Big Band. My professional teaching experience started in 1986 with teaching students one-on-one. My students have achieved lifelong skills on piano, brass, woodwind, and guitar. I teach in my studio and I travel to family homes. I teach classical, jazz, and gospel music styles. Combining instruction with performance and additional auditions will compliment any student's music experience. Read More
Instruments: Voice
Nothing is more rewarding than witnessing my students learn at their own pace, lessons are not to be rushed and homework is not to be treated carelessly. Understanding and being able to interpret the history of a piece is just as important and learning it, how are you to convince an audience without knowing it for yourself? I encourage this by setting realistic and well obtainable goals. Recognition for accomplishments is definitely a helping tool as well as fuel for progress of vocal abilities. Read More
Instruments: Drums
I love method books and written resources. Most of the books I use are specific to the goals of the individual student. So below is a list of a few books that I like: Syncopation by Ted Reed Stick Control by George Stone Patterns series by Gary Chaffee The New Breed by Gary Chester Realistic Rock by Carmine Appice The Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley The Commandments of RB Drumming by Zoro Future Sounds by Dave Garibaldi Four Way Coordination by Marvin Dahlgreen and Elliot Fine Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin Studio and Big Band Drumming by Steve Houghton Universal Rhythms by Dave DiCenso Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
I work to customize my teaching to each individuals learning style, and aim to give each student the tools to achieve success in whatever their musical goals may be. Central to my teaching goal is the belief that learning an instrument should be fun and build confidence, rather than anxiety, and I strive to make the lesson experience a safe and comfortable space, where stress is low but focus is high, so maximum learning can take place. Instruments: Piano
I start all of my beginning students in John Thompson Book One as it provides a great base to build on. After that lessons become very personalized to the student's learning styles as well as their individual goals. Adult beginners I supplement with Faber. I aim to get all of my students playing "real" music very quickly without sacrificing solid technique and fundamentals. I tend to spend half of a lesson on drills and half working on songs. Read More
