I have taught group percussion to elementary -aged students and worked with a high school band and percussion ensemble. My teaching style is strongly centered around the idea that music is more than an activity, it is a way to communicate life skills from a teacher to a student. The ideas of practicing and performing teach students what it means to be organized, skilled, and hard working. I think that it is important for students to set their own goals, achieve them, and be praised for their success. Older children just beginning to enter the world of music will begin with the fundamentals of musicianship, sound, and breathing. From there I will progress to rhythm, pitch, and notation. When these skills are mastered I will get the students comfortable with their instruments and begin playing. Students that have a background in music with their instruments will be assessed to determine the level of teaching required.
