I think relationships is what drives everything. If you don't build a trustworthy relationship with your student and learn about who they are and what they like then, you will not have a successful turn out. I believe in only sticking with what the student is comfortable with learning. I will push and stretch them when it is needed, but I like to start by asking "what do you want to learn?" Assessing the students age, interests, needs, and culture will contribute to the creation of their lessons. I also find that knowing the students levels and vocal ranges can also be helpful in creating lessons for the students.
