Overview:

I am extremely energetic and passionate when it comes to equipping students with certain skills and knowledge about music and how it all works. I believe that music is the greatest power in todays age. It has the power to change moods, change attitudes, music is relateable, and music is a universal language that everyone seems to understand. I went to school at Middle Tennessee State for Audio Engineering, but now I am studying at Lee University online for my theology degree. I have been a musician my whole life and I understand the structure that music takes but I also understand the freedom that needs to come with this amazing gift. I had gigs where I have played classical music and I have had gigs where I've played jazz music and improved the whole time. No matter what route or what style you want to play, music is beautiful all around. I want to students to walk away with knowing that music should be fun, and it should be exciting. It has had an amazing impact on me and I want to be able to share that with other students.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching on and off since 2016. People would ask me for spontaneous lessons and I would meet them either in their home. Most of my lessons were on vocals or piano. During this time I would also teach trombone lessons after school. My lessons are always energetic and entertaining. I always try to keep them engaged by setting an achievable goals for them for that lesson. If a student doesn't have milestones that they have reached, then it decreases engagement and motivation. I believe in encouraging and boosting their confidence in what they are doing. This is what drives people to learn, when they are having fun and enjoying themselves.

METHODS USED

First, I feel like the best thing to do is to get to know what ever student I am working with. Learning how they learn and how they are wired are the key to even being acceptable. It is so important to intentionally build trust and learn what they relate to in their world. For beginner students I always want to start with note names and being able to recognize which notes are what. After that we learn how being confident in these individual notes are the building blocks to learning things like scales, chords, and up to full complex scores. I like for students not to just understand about how to play their instrument, but to understand how this all fits together and WHY. If I am teaching a student on any instrument my job is to equip them with the necessary tools to eventually be able to make these connections and see how these consistent patterns fit together to make this amazing art we call music. I love to walk through how notes, and scales are layered to make chords and training them on how to recognize these. These chords and notes together are then layered to make songs and pieces. Students then have a big picture on how this concept of music is honestly quite simple. Even the most complex pieces of music can be stripped down to simplicity. I want students to be able to look at a difficult piece of music for not just "complex or hard", but lots of little simple pieces that fit really well together.

LESSON STYLE

I think relationships is what drives everything. If you don't build a trustworthy relationship with your student and learn about who they are and what they like then, you will not have a successful turn out. I believe in only sticking with what the student is comfortable with learning. I will push and stretch them when it is needed, but I like to start by asking "what do you want to learn?" I believe in setting an achievable goal in every lesson. When you a-knowledge when these goals have been achieved it inspires the student greatly. I love to see when a student is impacted by how far they are coming in their process.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
