If you don't build a trustworthy relationship with your student and learn about who they are and what they like then, you will not have a successful turn out. I've taught beginner violin and piano lessons with the Salvation Army, and I have a few private violin students of my own currently. I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. I cover both the physical skill of creating a musical sound and building a song from its melodic and rhythmic core. In doing this both children and adults are tutored in proper positioning of their hands and bodies to create a comfortable and relaxed posture of playing. I cover a variety of notation methods including tabulature, staff notation and chordal diagrams.
