For beginning piano students I typically use the Alfred Method. Once the student demonstrates a grasp of the fundamentals I introduce solo repertoire. For adults I typically use the John Thompson Adult Piano Course and we work together to find the solo repertoire. For voice lessons, I typically teach the bel canto style. I will work with vocalises that help develop breath control, placement and open vowels. With children who are just beginning, I use a rote approach similar to the Suzuki Method; e.g., First, I find an appropriate traditional melody that the student knows and loves, then I play it for them, and have them emulate what I am doing. I began giving private lessons in 2003, and have taught in my own studio since 2010. I have taught group percussion to elementary -aged students and worked with a high school band and percussion ensemble.
