This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. It would be absolutely foolish of me to ever think that I can use one teaching method or style for each and every student. So I teach based on the student's learning style and predispositions.
