When it comes to the actual knitty-gritty of teaching music, I like to listen to what a student is interested in before putting together any kind of lesson plan. Often times, when starting from scratch with children, I'll begin with a book from the Alfred series to teach true green newcomers on piano. These books move slowly, but start off with recognizable tunes so students can feel accomplished and satisfied right away by realizing "I know this song! Read More

I am a passionate, self-motivated, energetic music instructor who loves work with students and sharing my love of music. In 2016, I graduated from South Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Industry and minored in Music Education. Within those studies, my primary instrument of focus was the trombone, however, along the way, I picked up and worked on different types of instruments, such as the flute, all of the low brass, piano, and my vocal ability. I like to start out with a basic curriculum and adjust according to how quickly the student absorbs information. Through my experience as a piano instructor and former music student, I understand that everyone learns at a different pace and has different backgrounds of experience which I fell will make the teacher student relationship unique. Depending on the speed of understanding, I present more challenges through various activities, technical exercises, and individual performances for peers to showcase what has been learned. Read More

For beginner strings I use several method books (elementary and 6th students can come with prescribed method books from their public school teacher) such as Essential Elements, Orchestra Expressions, String Essentials. If parents would like to use solo books, I use Suzuki Method Books (not necessarily the method of only learning by ear) in conjunction with note reading workbooks. As they age I use other method books (violin, viola, cello. double bass) such as Wohlfahrt, Mazas, Kreutzer, Flesch, Schradieck, Dont, Bach Sonatas and Partitas, Rick Mooney's shifting and thump position book series, Klengel, Bach Cello Suites, Popper, PIatti, Smandl Method, Fischer, and of course as they advance any standard sonatas and concerti, such as Mozart 5 in AM, Mendelssohn in em, Hadyn Concerto in CM, anything from the Baroque, classical, and romantic era. I have the most Experience using the following Method Books: Standard of Excellence, Essential Elements, Accent on Achievement, Instrumental Methods and many other methods. Initially (and throughout) I place a high value on performance fundamentals. I start with a focus on proper posture and breathing. Once this can be executed I breakdown the nomenclature of the student's instrument, how to put it together and break it down. Next the focus becomes proper grip for mallets/sticks and embouchure placement for winds. Read More
