I have fun with my students. They learn to play songs that they want to play, and I provide theoretical and technical instruction within that framework. Learning to play an instrument is a lifelong endeavor which provides both challenge and satisfaction. I'm an active listener and seek to understand each student's needs and goals. Education is a two-way street, and I learn from my students as they learn from me. Read More

I have always enjoyed teaching others. Even in high school, I consistently helped my peers with their learning and enjoyed helping them learn how to play percussion instruments. After starting college in 2009, I began formally teaching percussion privately and in groups at high schools in my area. I have since expanded to teaching guitar, bass guitar, and composition, incorporating compositional elements into all of my lessons. I have found that encouraging students to explore music through composing original material helps them in every other facet of learning music. Read More

The student is not responsible for purchasing any books or material, as I provide everything to them. For children I love teaching simple 1 finger versions of two chords, to give them an instant gratification and the knowledge that they really can play guitar. For older students, I am able to completely design a lesson plan around their interests and favorite styles of music. I like to ask the students during the first lesson to name a few songs of any difficulty that they would eventually like to be able to play, and the lesson plan we follow will inevitably reach one of those songs, providing the student with a great benchmark for their success and inspiring them even more.I also incorporate light ear training into my lessons, as your ear is your strongest asset as a musician, and I am able to break down the musical genre barriers to show students that all music truly is the same, and it is all attainable. Typically I like to using songs and common chord progressions and incorporate different skills we are working on into songs. This way the student learns a repertoire while learning skills. However this is up for debate and we can cover whatever the student desires. Often times teachers teach a blanket method using certain scales, chords, ect, expecting that this will miraculously result in the improvement the student desires. I am firm believer that this is not the case. Read More

This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. Read More

With all of my students I use the music that they love to develop lessons that are fun and effective. Any type of genre or song can be arranged in a way that is approachable to any skill level and will contain many necessary skills needed to play music. Every student learns in his or her own unique way and I strive to accentuate my students personal learning styles to give him or her the best chance at success. Read More

Depending on experience level I like to get people making music as soon as possible. I know that trudging through the basics can be tiring. Of course some basics are neccesary but I like to make the basics sound as musical as possible. We will cover the fundamentals but we'll do so in such a way that it won't feel like so much work. I like to use books, depending on skill level, for reference but I have a very hands on approach and feel that the best work to be done together is the stuff that can't be found in the book.
