There are many kinds of method books that all get the job done, but ultimately growth is up to the student and if the material they study can maintain their interest. For this reason, I treat each student individually and work with their own goals and interests. Some students are more interested in modern genres such as rock, blues or country, and will in turn be more likely to rely on tablature throughout their musical careers. Read More

As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music. I will typically start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method. It is one of the most commonly used books to learn from and spans from the very beginner up to some more advanced techniques. After the beginning lessons I will gauge what the student is interested in and develop the lessons from there. I can also help students prepare for solo recitals as I've performed them myself. I offer both half hour and hour lessons depending on how much the student can handle practicing each week. Read More

When teaching students who are young, I would first start off with the fundamentals. For example, I would explain music terms to them and develop the new language from there. Once the student has a basic understanding of music, I would then talk about the Circle of Fifths and encourage them to participate in events like concerts or festivals in school. When becoming a young adult, I would then discuss competitions and help them prepare for college auditions. Read More
