Many people remember music lessons in their youth as a time consuming source of frustration, built upon outdated music with no connection to the student's day to day life. This is why I like to divide lessons between fundamentals such as reading and theory, and apply those practices to the students' favorite songs. The greatest thing is to be able to see a student perform the music they love, so the real goal is for the student to build a repertoire of favorite songs to perform for family, friends, on-line or onstage. I base my lessons around the student, not a cookie cutter method. I look for three crieteria: a student's interests, ability level, and time they have to practice. I am very interested in what the student thinks of the lessons, and ask for feedback frequently. I encourage them to bring their own ideas and songs into the lessons. I am very keen on review; if someone doesn't understand what we did last week, they won't progress to what we are doing now. Read More

I try to provide a good balance between working on theory, technique, and repertoire, and working on aspects that might be more fun like a students favorite song. This allows the student to make progress while also keeping motivated, which is really important for long term goals. For children, the balance has to lean more towards the more entertaining aspect, because of the reduced attention span. I actively work towards getting the younger students to increase their tolerance towards difficult challenges so that they can make more overall progress. Read More

As a music annotator, analyst and critic, I have worked for over 15 years with major arts agencies, technical journals and CD labels in performing arts media, technical writing, editing and proofreading, following a career as a successful classical touring musician. In 2010, after living 25 years in Manhattan, I moved back to where I was born – Bergen County. Working in my teaching studios in both Teaneck and New York, I specialize in teaching and coaching up-and-coming young musicians, college-bound guitarists, adults with backgrounds in other instruments, in classical, acoustic and crossover styles.
