I see teaching as a gateway to help students express their creativity, while incorporating a disciplined approach to help them achieve more from challenged in life in general. i don't simply field song requests, I also explain to my students the inner workings of why certain musical concepts work, why the artist may have chosen that and how you as the student can incorporate these creative ideas into your own compositions. I have an open approach to teaching guitar, and encourage students to utilize knowledge obtained through my lessons in whatever context they prefer as opposed to gearing them towards a certain style of playing. Much of my own teaching was based in jazz, but I have managed to find myself utilizing much of what I was taught playing in a heavy, shoegazey rock band. The preferences of my students are important to me, and while setting goals for progress is important, it is important to me that students learn at their own pace and move forward on their own initiative. I started out as a percussionist, studying throughout high school and in to college at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. During my time in Boston, I discovered a bustling bluegrass music scene and my focus switched to stringed instruments, namely the mandolin and the violin. Since College, I have been using all veins of traditional music to join in and build communities of artists. I'm very well connected in the New York City Bluegrass, Irish, and Jazz scenes. Read More

I have been teaching music since graduating with a Bachelor's degree in music education in 1991. While I have had an active performing career, I have always had more of an interest in teaching. I have taught privately in my own music studio, taught elementary music and choir, high school music theory and guitar, published my own series of method books and given seminars to teachers on developing their own guitar programs as well as infusing technology into their lessons. Use a variety of exercises: To keep things interesting and help students learn more effectively, I might incorporate a variety of exercises into my lessons. This might include rudiments, beats from different styles of music, and sight-reading exercises. 4. Read More

I try to provide a good balance between working on theory, technique, and repertoire, and working on aspects that might be more fun like a students favorite song. This allows the student to make progress while also keeping motivated, which is really important for long term goals. For children, the balance has to lean more towards the more entertaining aspect, because of the reduced attention span. I actively work towards getting the younger students to increase their tolerance towards difficult challenges so that they can make more overall progress. Read More

I'm the lead guitar player and songwriter in a Philadelphia band who play a progressive blend of Rock, Funk, Americana, Jazz, and Dance music. I also perform frequently as a solo act and acoustic duo around the region and host my own open mic Wednesday nights. I've been playing for twelve years now and although my degree is not in music I took a number of college level music courses in jazz guitar and classical composition and lessons for the better part of my childhood.
