Depending on the level of the student and what they are looking to achieve through the lessons I would use a few different methods. I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. The fundamentals are where you have to start to build a scaffolding and practice books are great for doing this. I also like to use songs and tunes as a way of teaching different concepts. Read More

A practical level of playing is always achievable, keeping in mind one's (typically busy) schedule. So small increments of self practice are necessary, gradually increasing stamina and confidence. Time on instrument is most important, for whatever one plays. Improvisation (playing on the fly) is a part of music that I have always enjoyed and appreciated, especially in a collective setting. It can be simple or highly involved improvisation, but I believe it is an important skill, and can be seen as a stepping stone. Read More

Its amazing to watch my students fall in love with their instrument and gain confidence and joy from learning to play. Everyone is different and will need to go at their own pace. My job is more of a "coach" - setting up structures and practices to help you succeed but not doing the work for you! I will help fuel your desire to grow as a musician and encourage you to progress at your own pace while celebrating each and every success along the way while tailoring my instruction based on my students needs and goals. The lesson is really up to the student. i can show them the fundememntals if asked but i much prefer to guage what the student already knows and teach them whatever area theyre interested in. my lessons are never overbearing or rushed and the student is given as much time as they need per lesson to grasp and utilise a concept. my job really isto tailor mylessons for the students enjoyment and progress;and i love seeing the progress!! My name is Joshua, I am new to teaching, but am very passionate about the guitar! I have been playing for the better part of a decade, have performed in ensemble groups, jazz bands, as well as local rock and metal groups! I do NOT possess a formal degree in music. I did however take music theory, as well as AP theory in high school, so I have a solid enough understanding of music to teach you or your child how to understand basic concepts! Read More

I strongly believe that everyone is very different. Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this. Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play. I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard. Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. Read More

A principle that I have lived by in the 45 plus years that I have taught, is that I am teaching the STUDENT as an individual with a particular personality, learning style, level of patience, tolerance for making mistakes and openness to trying new things. I do not teach MUSIC; I use it as the vehicle for learning. When a teacher really understands the nature of the student and shows his/her commitment to making every lesson a successful and happy experience for him/her, then the process of learning to play an instrument becomes a mutual and fulfilling experience.
