ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

MA: Columbia (composition and theory) DMA: Columbia (music composition)

Awards:

Stephen is a Fulbright Fellow and has received grants and awards from such prestigious institutions as the American Music Center, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Johnson Composer' Conference, and has won the Joseph Bearns Prize and the BMI Young Composers Award. He has had numerous residencies, including Peterborough Cathedral, Weir Farm and Soaring Gardens.

Overview:
Stephen is a graduate of Columbia University. A composer of more than fifty pieces, his music has been performed by both chamber groups and orchestras in the US and abroad. The most notable performers of his compositions include the Gregg Smith Singers, Stitching Combinatie van Utrechtse Muziekbelangen, New Calliope Singers, Group for Contemporary Music, and the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble. Stephen continues to work as a freelance guitarist and conductor, performing in various national venues with the Gregg Smith Singers, the Group for Contemporary Music, the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, and the Composers Ensemble. He also co-founded the New York Qin Society, and has performed qin music and lectured on Chinese music internationally.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught music for over 15 years, in colleges, music schools and privately. One thing that I have noticed is that, with more experience, I have a lot more fun--and so do my students.
METHODS USED
My students cover a wide range, from bluegrass to concert classical. The correct technique is, in my experience, the one that will be able to underlay any musical style. For example, if the left hand is flexible and well-formed, then blues, Bach and flamenco all will come more easily. This core is essential, because even at the most beginning stages, the student should be able to play with musical expression. Books I commonly use are Suzuki, Parkening, and Essential Elements--but I equally commonly use other materials, depending on the student's interest.
LESSON STYLE
What are my students looking for in music? That's an ongoing question in every case, and the exploration of that is a joyful journey.

Fantastic! He is patient, encouraging, and enthusiastic throughout every lesson. He does exceptionally well at keeping Irene engaged and motivated for the whole lesson (which is a significant challenge!!) He praises even while correcting, which truly generates a sense of confidence in Irene. Amazing, and truly valued.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
