That's why the student and I set goals for the student, whether it's learning a new song, practicing a certain amount of minutes a week, or auditioning for something like a musical or talent show! Setting small goals like these helps the student feel accomplished, and want to continue to work on their new found skills. My lessons for vocalists are divided into two sections: technique and repertoire. For singers, breath management skills are of primary importance as this directly affects intonation. I like to begin with Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer. My students can choose any songs they would like to sing while we work on musicianship skills including expression and lyrical phrasing.
