I have a BFA in Jazz Studies from City College- CUNY. I've had the opportunity to play in Broadway shows, clubs, as well as festivals in the US and abroad. These have been with several artists in the Jazz and Latin music world, as well as with my own group. With these experiences I have become well versed in several styles including Jazz, Latin, Rock , and Pop music. I think being well rounded is important with music and one thing that I've noticed is building on what the student is interested in. Started off with materials builds important fundamentals, but if my student is nodding off to sleep, then I'm not doing my job. I'll begin by setting a goal and seeing what the student is interested in (i.e. what band/song would they like to learn about?) From there, I'll set a realistic goal (Flight of the Bumblebee can't and shouldn't be the first song on guitar that you learn) and we'll learn the techniques, structure, and music theory that exists in a certain song. I do, however, allow diversion and conversation in lessons. If there is a song that may explain the musical idea, we will stop and listen. If a young child wants to relay a story from school they thought of because of our practice, I will stop and listen. I may also speak in depth about musical history, style, or even the psychology of music. I think this combination draws students into the mind of a musician, and gets them to start thinking like one. I generate an individualized course of study for each student. Beginning students typically begin with the Faber method, to make sure they develop a strong foundation for future study. As they progress, I begin to introduce age-appropriate repertoire. My more advanced students focus on musicianship technique as well as repertory.
