I want to make guitar lessons fun, helpful and informative. If the student isn't learning what they want to learn and not having fun while doing it, I'm not doing my job. Getting the student to feel confident, no matter the amount they have played is important to me. I'm a laid-back, happy person and that reflects in the way I teach. No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in. I began teaching the guitar and beginner piano in 2012 after I graduated from UCSB and have been teaching in students’ homes and online since then. My teaching experience ranges from teaching adults who want to learn the fundamentals of classical guitar (beginning technique and sight-reading exercises) to teaching young kids interested in modern methods of playing, learning pop and rock songs, and playing solos. In 2015, I taught in afterschool programs, notably for Hancock Park Elementary School in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, for which I taught an excellent group of curious learners as we surveyed modern guitar methods, sight-reading, chords and harmonic progressions, and playing in duos. I have been a musician for over 10 years. I started out in my high school big band as a trumpet player before I switched to playing the bass. I completed my studies at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico in 2016 where I was born and have now relocated to the state of Washington. I have the same approach to teaching beginner and intermediate piano. Again, we learn our notes in five finger position and then we learn to read time signatures, notes in the treble clef, chords, and rhythms, as well as playing complete songs. When teaching piano for beginners I like to pick the leaning material that we'll use based on the individual because we all learn differently and I like to keep it fun so the student stays interested.
