I believe singing is a full body experience and focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind. My lessons are student led. I've been teaching music, in some capacity, since I was 17 and captain of my highschool's drumline. In college I taught drumset lessons to students of all ages and in graduate school I taught a music theory course for 5 semesters as well as classical percussion to 6th - 8th graders. Getting to know my students, what they like and don't like, what they read and listen to, is one of my favorite things and I think it really helps engender a life long passion for music when a teacher takes a personal interest in the students lives. Guitar: For children, I begin with simple folk songs to teach them chords and strums. From there, we progress to picking patterns. For teens and adults, I use both folk songs and easy pop music. For both age groups, I encourage note reading and some classical work. For classical guitar, I use technique books by Aaron Shearer. Based on my teaching experience, the attention span is significantly shorter for ages under 12, and therefore it isn't helpful to delve into one concept/musical idea for longer than 15 minutes (max) with this age group. I find that younger-novice students gain the most out of their musical instruction when they are introduced to various musical concepts while being provided a structured routine for practice. For my intermediate age (12-18) to advanced-level students, I spend the most of our lesson time addressing the 5 fundamental systems of voice - respiration, registration, articulation, phonation, and resonance.
