I approach teaching music with patience and enthusiasm. I realize that there is an ebb and flow in every person's life and progress cannot be measured in an even intervals. I played many solo performances, joined wind ensemble, played in the All-State band each year and went to the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Toward the end of High School, I grew a new taste for guitar and silently practiced it behind my saxophone, in college, until I was good enough to perform with it. I began teaching electric guitar and bass in high school. My approached involved a degree of a musical philosophy. Sometimes we would go outside and listen to the sounds of the train going by, the wind, the birds, cars etc in an almost meditative approach to learn to appreciate that music is all around us. I always try to adapt to the student's preferences as far as learning, playing, length of lesson, amount of information, all-around comfortability. Goals are important, but so is acknowledging a student's progress and accomplishment / improvement. I do not believe in negative reinforcement, I'm very patient. Piano is a very difficult instrument to learn, at first it can be extremely overwhelming (especially for a pre-teen) so it's super important to take it one step at a time and have the first couple lessons be laid-back and relaxed, with no pressure.
