There is also an Alfred's adult course for the older students. It really conveys everything from actual performance pieces to theory concepts. Once the basics of the piano are learned (i.e reading music, note names and finger positions etc.), pieces will begin to be played. Not to place all my eggs in one basket, I will also personally pick pieces I feel are appropriate with the current skill level of the student, ranging from pop to classical to ragtime to anything I feel would be fun and challenging. Regardless of which instrument(s) my student is learning, I generally teach at the pace of the student. I never rush a student, and I keep with a scenario that is COMFORTABLE for both of us. Being relaxed is important to learning, and I always stress having students' hands relatively loose while holding and playing their instrument. I have lesson plans that I devise myself, while referring slightly to instructional videos and books also. Read More

For my beginning students I prefer to use The Hal Leonard Complete Edition books. I find this course to be clearly written and easy to understand, and it offers a broad musical foundation to facillitate students as they move easily to higher levels of guitar studies. In addition, I incorporate rhythm reading, ear training and chord studies which I feel are essential to the development of a practical guitarist and musician. Read More

I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. I am a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Performing Arts where I studied Music Education. I also have a diploma in Piano Performance and Teaching from the Royal College of Music. I have been an instrumental instructor for the past 25 years, and enjoy sharing the joys of music with learners. I believe that learning to play an instrument should be an enjoyable experience. I acknowledge that all students are different and learn at different paces, so my teaching is tailored to accommodate each student's strengths, weaknesses, likes and preferences. Read More

When students are being lazy I call them out on it by saying something like, "What is that?" It shakes them up and makes them realize I catch every mistake. It's done in a lighthearted way so that the students feel comfortable with me as I do not want to drive away students who fear their teacher. Comfort and discipline are imperative to help them achieve their goals. If a student feels comfortable with their instrument they are more willing to practice and achieve a higher goal of performance. Read More
