I began teaching music in 2006 while still in college, and I have worked at a variety of different music schools and teaching companies, most notably at the University of Southern California. I taught and maintained a small voice studio of my own in New York City for four years before the pandemic forced me back to the west coast to care for my family. I have been playing bass and guitar since seventh grade. I have played in schools jazz band, wind ensemble, string ensemble and chapel band. I have also been the bass player for St. Pauls Lutheran church since my freshman year of high school. I have taught young beginners the basics of playing guitar and bass at St. Pauls Lutheran school. Iencourage students learn what I find is important for them to progress and eventually teach themselves,but I make sure not to exceed the pace of the individual student. At the same time, I make sure that the students are learning something that they consider enjoyable. I might ask if there is a particular song or style they are interested in learning. I do enjoy letting the student pick a song they want to learn and going over the song together. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, its important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress and this makes students eager to learn more.  My philosophy is to ask why, investigate what interests the student to learn music in the first place. Nine times out of ten it is a short-lived pipe dream, when the realization of consistent practice, sacrifice, and hard work equals results is reality. I then utilize lessons plans or books that I have used, accordingly. I find its good practice to have some form of a guide or lesson plan, but also make sure they have the basic concept of music theory down in order for the journey to make sense. Read More
