Im a lifelong musician and student, and I love sharing my knowledge, skills, and passion with my students. In 2009, I graduated from NYU with a BA in Music. Since then, I have been teaching private guitar lessons. I also play guitar in the prolific and influential NYC metal band Pyrrhon, which fuses elements of metal, punk, jazz, and classical. We've worked with several distinguished record labels and have toured internationally extensively. Read More

A lesson with me equals half of the allotted time being used to learn good technique (i.e., learning healthy vocal habits, singing vocalises, learning to read music, playing scales, etc.) and the other half of the time singing and playing repertoire. The repertoire includes both pieces chosen by Kathy (always approved by the student) which excite and inspire the students particular musical tastes while providing a new challenge in technique to be conquered, and also pieces brought in by the student; for example, if a student is working on music for a specific performance, etc., or if they just really like a piece and want to learn how to play or sing it, I am always ready and willing to lend a hand and an ear! I am also the creator of a unique method called "The Seven Secrets of Jazz and Soul" which emphasizes the importance of using simple/easy-to-understand language, even when teaching the most difficult of concepts. I also believe in the importance of "coaching" as opposed to lecturing and try to minimize reading, writing and one-sided lecturing during the lesson. Instead, I sit next to my students, and calmly guide them through the creative process. Read More

For students who are children I like to start to start learning rhythms through common children’s songs to show how easy music can be. Depending on the instrument, one of the many Hal Leonard books is always a good option. If they are a little older, I will use music that they like to teach how music theory and fundamental skills makes up all the musi they enjoy. We will often learn songs that speak to them and I will use their favorite genres to curate new songs to teach and show them new material and how it relates to their instrument. Read More

My teaching experience started when I was still in college a few years ago. I start with new students by encouraging them to practice and study music consistently, as this is the best way to internalize and truly learn the art. However, I also help students individually by focusing on the goals they are trying to accomplish in their playing. At the same time, I like for students to have fun because it is the failure of the teacher if the student is not having a good time or willing to go through the trials of becoming better at their craft. Learning to play an instrument is a skill that can last a lifetime. The benefits of perseverance, resilience, and positive self-esteem are also powerful forces in a student's development. With that in mind, I create a safe where students feel comfortable working to improve their musicianship. By acknowledging progress, students are excited to push themselves to accomplish their goals in music! By taking this student-centered approach, my students are excited to grow on their instrument.
