ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Associate Degree: County College of Morris
Overview:
I have been playing and studying music for over 40 years. By the time I entered high school, I had enough skills as a guitarist to join a band with several older students who were playing at dances and other local events. At this time, I started to take formal guitar lessons with a respected local teacher. I learned to read music and became interested in classical guitar. After high school, I attended County College and studied music theory and piano, and majored in classical guitar. I also joined the school jazz ensemble. I have studied percussion for several years as well, and this has given me a solid foundation in rhythms and reading different rhythms. After college, I sought out respected teachers in my area as well as attended different guitar workshops around the USA so I could continue my music studies. I currently play society-type gigs and teach guitar, bass, and ukulele. I enjoy playing Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classical, and fingerstyle music. I primarily play electric and acoustic guitar, however, I do occasionally play professional bass gigs.
EXPERIENCE
I have more than 30 years of experience in teaching guitar and bass lessons. I’ve taught many different types of students—young children, senior citizens, and everything in between. I’ve taught and coached students who have just wanted to play a couple of their favorite songs as well as students who were looking for the necessary skills to get into various music programs/ensembles. I honed my music teaching skills by working for several North Jersey schools of music (Village Music in Butler, Bach to Rock Music in Riverdale, and Musician’s Corner in Pompton Plains) from 1988 to 2006. I also spent a couple of summers teaching at the National Guitar Workshop in Connecticut in the early 2000s. I’ve been teaching music privately for over 10 years, and with each passing year, I become even more passionate about what I do.
METHODS USED
I know that every student has different aspirations as to why he or she wants to learn to play an instrument. The advantage of one-on-one lessons compared to a class with a set curriculum is that the lessons are catered to one student. I strive to put together lesson plans catered to each student—lesson plans that have students playing the music they enjoy as well as learning the necessary music fundamentals to become musicians. I believe that it is important for students to understand that music is a language that transcends their instrument of choice. When they understand that music is its own language, the possibilities that they were not aware of become open to them, such as easily learning a second or third instrument. If the student or parents request a set curriculum as in the book form, my main go-to book is The Best Guitar Method by Brian Rivers. It is a great book for all ages and covers the necessary beginner to intermediate topics that build a solid understanding of guitar and music fundamentals. It presents technical, rudimentary, and musical aspects in an easy to understand format. I have other books that I pull examples from for topics being studied as well. I often create my own custom lessons for which the students and I work on together to create a lesson plan that can be viewed via tablet or computer, or printed out in PDF form. I utilize technology such as video, slow down, and notation programs to facilitate lesson plans. I use the industry-standard music notation programs Sibelius and Guitar Pro to create unique easy to read lessons that cater to what my students are working on. I present a lesson plan as per how each student prefers to learn such as standard music notation, TAB, or diagrams; I believe that all are useful.
LESSON STYLE
I have been teaching music lessons for about 30 years and I enjoy teaching music as much as I enjoy playing it. I strive for a relaxed approach towards teaching music. I stress to my students that slow, deliberate practice every day will yield results. If students are moving forward towards their goals at a comfortable pace for them, it is a good thing. I believe that the most effective way students absorb material is by varying my approach as per student and task at hand. I reinforce the importance of daily practice and realistic goals; 15 minutes of focused practice goes a long way at any part of one’s music development. I stress the importance of fundamentals and proper technique. It is essential early on not to form bad habits that will preclude progress. I can be contacted via email between scheduled lessons to assist a student if they are confused about a part of a lesson plan. I’m appreciative that they take the time to reach out to me instead of coming to the next lesson unprepared. I do encourage the importance of learning standard music notation because I believe that it helps understand the big picture of music. I believe that not knowing how to read standard music notation is akin to speaking a language but not being able to read or write it. I do respect that everyone has a different reason to want to play and I do not force people to learn what they do not want to. Playing music is supposed to be and should be fun.

I'm 22 and started my first real job this year. Having more leisure time I decided to dust off that guitar I bought years ago and really learn how to play. Lou is a great teacher! I progressed from a "advanced beginner" to intermediate guitar player in no time. Lou quickly determined what I needed to focus on to become a more complete guitar player/musician. With his unique combination of applying the language of music to the guitar I have progressed in a way that I did not expect. Perfect combination of music theory and music I like to play (classic and modern rock.). I highly recommend Lou as a guitar teacher.

I took guitar and bass lessons with Lou many years ago. I learned so much about music and playing from him. Very patient and enthusiastic teacher. Versatile player as well as teacher. My 13 son that has been playing guitar for several years now is currently taking lessons with Lou. He is doing well with the lessons.

I highly recommend Lou for a guitar teacher. My 14 year old daughter saved and bought her own guitar and then taught herself from YouTube. She was so committed that I felt was time for one on one lessons with a guitar teacher. She is progressing nicely with online lessons. Very convenient and she is really doing very well.

Lou understands the core (or soul) to many styles of music. This made him 'connect' with what my son was looking for in a music teacher. He has an on game, intuitive sense of the rhythmic & melodic components that make songs work.

Studying guitar with Lou is terrific. He is a low pressure, patient teacher who combines my personal goals with practical music theory and songs into one enjoyable, productive lesson. I highly recommend Lou as a guitar teacher.

I highly recommend Lou for a guitar teacher. He's aware that all students are different and caters his lessons to the individual. He crafts lessons that address the student’s goals while providing necessary tools to become a complete musician as well as a guitar player.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
