My most important takeaway is that I want my students to leave a lesson feeling motivated. I had entirely way too many teachers that failed to instill a sense of passion about guitar. "Drills, drills, and more drills." Lessons would feel more like work than fun, and once I'd get home, I'd have the most difficult time finding the energy or the drive to practice, and instead, would rather jam with friends and play music that I wanted to hear. For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with. I have also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students to enjoy his or her instrument and to motivate them to practice and continue to learn. I do my best to have fun with the students. I also encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I have been teaching guitar and music since 1997 while I was midway through my Bachelor's Degree program at William Paterson University. I have consistently taught all ages from 7 up through 70, as well as all abilities from absolute beginners and hobbyists, to advanced and even professional musicians and TV/Film actors. I first began teaching private lessons in the New Jersey and New York City metropolitan area at both my personal recording studio and other establishments for 11 years, and then since 2008, I have been teaching in Los Angeles at both my personal recording studio and other establishments as well. Nothing is more exciting for me to watch than when a student gains confidence within music! As a teacher it's important for me to lay the fundamentals and strengthen their dexterity in music. However, artists are born when a student's individuality is nurtured and they express themselves with the tools they've been given. It's one thing to gain knowledge in how to sing (or play), but it's another when you can communicate effectively with your instrument so that everyone else can feel it. Read More

I always start with the absolute foundation and fundamentals of music. I find when I start teaching students that have taken lessons previously, there are many holes in their understanding of their respective instrument and understanding of music in general. Consistency and steady progression is vital. What method books I recommend vary depending on the instrument and will be discussed prior to the first lesson. I encourage all students to come prepared with pencils, folder, staff paper and approved method book. Read More

For beginning piano students, I often get them started with the Faber piano series, then incorporate music theory along with their song requests. For beginning fretted string students (guitar/bass/ukelele), I like to start with the Hal Leonard method book to get started with reading notation, so that we cover more than just tabs and chords. For drum/percussion students, I'll have them start with a combination of Syncopation by Ted Reed and Peter Erksine's Drumset Essentials Volume 1. Read More
