I love teaching beginning students, in particular, as I get to watch them grow and learn a completely new skill they've never had before! I love watching students find their voice and gain the skill of playing a new instrument so that they might find a way to express themselves through music! I try to combine musicality and technique in a fun, engaging way that makes students excited to practice. Read More

My main goal is to make the student feel comfortable and to convey to the student that music is supposed to be enjoyable. That being said, we will work out of books and play along cd's and I do expect the student to come in prepared for each lesson. Read More

I have been taught guitar by ten different teachers and understand a wide variety of styles as a result. I am two semesters away from graduating William Paterson University with a Music Studies degree, primarily focused in music theory. Though I have spent many hours working very hard at my instrument, I consider myself primarily a songwriter and producer and spend much of my time writing songs for my band or engineering and producing albums for other artists. Practice regularly: Consistent practice is key to improving as a drummer. I might encourage students to set aside a certain amount of time each day or week for practice, and to break down their practice sessions into smaller, more manageable chunks. 3. Use a variety of exercises: To keep things interesting and help students learn more effectively, I might incorporate a variety of exercises into my lessons. This might include rudiments, beats from different styles of music, and sight-reading exercises. 4. Read More

I'm new to teaching on this level, but I do have some prior experience, most notably a paid tenure teaching a family friend for a summer. My student was very young and a novice, so I primarily utilized both formal methods for the understanding of fundamentals of music theory and technique, though I also helped her learn to play a few popular songs at her request. Letting students pursue their own personal interests in music in addition to teaching them the fundamentals is important to me, but with more experienced students I generally tend to focus more on improvisation and harmony as opposed to sightreading. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! Read More

I love the learning process and to see students progress through the stages of learning an instrument. I taught myself to play the piano before I started formal lessons. I began playing the saxophone at the same time I took up the piano. I entered my undergraduate program in 1992, majoring in music education with the saxophone and piano as my principle instruments. During my studies at the University of South Alabama, a new program was started in MIDI and I attended an extra year to master digital audio. Read More
