For beginner students I start with chord shapes. We'll learn what notes are in the chord, where to find the root note of the chord everywhere on the fret board and how to play that chord in multiple postions. Then we work on switching chords in basic progressions and later we move onto scales. For my intermediate students its more about technique and theory. In 1999, I graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Studies, and in 1997 I also received a Guitar Performance Certificate from Berklee College of Music upon completion of their Summer Guitar Sessions program. Teaching for me works best on an individual level. Students work on different levels and languages concerning music, and you have to be able to adapt to them. Some people might understand everything from the get go, some students need graphic support, some student need to learn song to understand what they are doing.
