I think it's important to consistently accomplish small goals in order to raise one's self esteem and motivation to practice the instrument. While some prefer to simply learn the basics of an instrument, others want to delve into more in-depth musical concepts and theory, and no one approach in more relevant than another. I look to show beginning or growing musicians the feeling of accomplishment that learning a new piece of music provides. Through exploring the songs and music that a student is most engaged with, as well as classics in a variety of genres, students gain a sense of how theory and/or techniques craft the music they love and know and that they, too, can create music that might one day be studied by future students. I try to custom my teaching style to the student that I am with so that the student can learn in the best way possible. I will always reinforce my lessons with method books such as William Leavitt's modern methods for guitar and reading studies, while also transcribing songs for students and creating lesson plans and diagrams for them. I incorporate different styles of teaching including 'rote learning', which is essentially learning by ear and imitation, as well as uniquely tailored exercises. I incorporate different warm-up etudes that I use with each student to build basic fundamentals of learning the instrument. And I also encourage students to practice scales and drills to develop their muscle memory.
