Instruments: Guitar
For beginning students, I typically start with some exercises for the left hand and right hand, easy arpegios, scales, melodies and chords. Once the student progresses to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For advanced students, I start with intermediate and advanced studies and pieces like 12 Studies of Fernando Sor, studies of Leo Brower, 12 studies of Villa Lobos or some famous spanish reprertoire for guitar such as Rodrigo, Turina, and Torroba. My approach to teaching guitar is roughly the same to students of all ages. I start with the very basics, assuming they know nothing about guitar. So I discuss the parts of the guitar and their functions. I teach how to tune in various ways. I like to use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method book 1, which covers what I have already described. By default the book guides the student through learning how to sight read, basic chords, proper posture, sight reading practice, etc. Read More

If there's a particular method book the student and/or parent want to use, they're the boss. If not or addition to, I simply teach HOW to play the instrument. I show them how to hold it, wrist/elbow positions and muscle memory techniques which are very important early on so bad habits don't develop to where they're playing the instrument versus fighting it. This is something I do with every new student regardless of their level, because they sought out a teacher for a very good reason. Read More

I believe that choosing lesson material should always be a collaborative experience between student and teacher. Flexibility is one of my core values in teaching music, as I’ve found that each student has unique interests, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Rather than going into lessons with a set curriculum, I like to give students some agency over what they’d like to learn while making sure to cover fundamentals as they apply along the way. Read More

The guitar is a unique instrument to teach. So-called "mirroring" is a very effective way of showing another guitarist how to play. There are many videos on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. that rely solely on this technique. That is, if you want to learn how to play a certain song there are many "instructional" videos that you can watch. That is very simple. However, do not confuse those videos with guitar instruction. Read More

Music has been an integral part of my life since I was old enough to learn how to turn on the radio. While through the years I have developed an appreciation for all styles of music, my personal playing style revolves around classical, pop, rock, jazz, and blue-grass. I have played in educational and amateur groups since college and started playing professionally about 20 years ago. I feel that the final step in any musician's development is to learn to play in a group. Read More
