I have a BFA in Jazz Studies from City College- CUNY. I've had the opportunity to play in Broadway shows, clubs, as well as festivals in the US and abroad. These have been with several artists in the Jazz and Latin music world, as well as with my own group. With these experiences I have become well versed in several styles including Jazz, Latin, Rock , and Pop music. For beginning students, I prefer to start them on a book based in warming up and getting used to movement in hands if we are playing piano. Throughout my teaching, I incorporate music theory and ear training into my classes as it creates a fantastic bridge to understanding the instrument. For beginning students, I typically begin with a deep dive on rudimental studies and keyboard skills on drums and mallet percussion. I gradually introduce notation and music literacy tools to improve the students understanding of how the fundamentals of music interact with one another. I use a lot of rote teaching methods as well to take full advantage of how physical percussion and drums can be. I find that students interests will quickly guide me to making suggestions for different repertoire to take on as the student is ready. Read More
