Overview:
I am a passionate performer and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. I began teaching when I was in High School, and that led to a fourteen-year career in independent schools. I have taken students all over the world — Japan, Bolivia, Ireland, and Italy were some notable trips — to share their passion for music with like-minded and diverse audiences. I believe every student should be working towards a public performance, and I am committed to preparing students of all ages to share their music with the world.
EXPERIENCE
I have been a music educator for over fourteen years. Most recently, I was Artist-in-Residence & Director of Contemporary Music at Pomfret School, and independent boarding & day school in Connecticut. I left the school in June, 2018 in order to explore new professional opportunities, and to be closer to my creative network in New York. I love working with students of all ages as they work to realize their own musical vision! As a composer and performer myself, I understand the benefits of consistent and productive regular practice. I have studied the classical canon, contemporary classical music, jazz, and popular styles, and performed them all in halls and clubs throughout the Northeast and the world. I have found the best way to motivate students is to partner with them to define their individual goals for each lesson. When they are excited to be working toward a goal that is meaningful for them, they will rapidly make progress!
METHODS USED
I generate an individualized course of study for each student. Beginning students typically begin with the Faber method, to make sure they develop a strong foundation for future study. As they progress, I begin to introduce age-appropriate repertoire. My more advanced students focus on musicianship technique as well as repertory. Depending on the goals for each student, I will work on jazz, classical, or contemporary styles. I also love working with students on concepts for improvisation and composition!
LESSON STYLE
Learning to play an instrument is a skill that can last a lifetime. The benefits of perseverance, resilience, and positive self-esteem are also powerful forces in a student's development. With that in mind, I create a safe where students feel comfortable working to improve their musicianship. By acknowledging progress, students are excited to push themselves to accomplish their goals in music! By taking this student-centered approach, my students are excited to grow on their instrument. By finding what motivates them, they are able to keep improving at a pace that feels comfortable for them.

Tim can play and teach more instruments and styles than anyone I have met throughout my 30+ years as a professional musician. His primary instrument(s) are keyboards, all musical genres and styles. (He knows the Hammond B3 up and down.) Yet he is also an amazing bassist, percussionist (trap, djembe, cajón) and guitarists. Composition and arranging are part of his skill set, and he has perfect pitch to top it off! His experience and skill as a teacher match his finesse as a musician. He knows how to inspire and motivate students of all ages and ability over the long term.

Tim is a thoughtful and caring teacher who has respect for his students. He is demanding but never abrasive. He models a love of learning and believes in the transformative power of art and music. After working closely with Tim for 12 years, I can highly recommend him without reservation.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
