I also worked as a School Aged Child Care Leader at Sandburg Elementary School from 2015 to 2018, further honing my skills in working with children ages 5 to 11. In 2019, I attended Marrowstone Music Festival as a Fellow. This gave me the opportunity to mentor high school and undergraduate flutists individually and during sectionals and to coach a student wind quintet. I make myself available via email and phone, always doing everything I can to continue the students' engagement outside of their lesson. For me teaching is incredibly rewarding. It brings me great pride to see my students grow and as musicians and reach their personal goals. For each student I like to set specific, small weekly and lesson goals as well as broader long term goals, with the intention that each small goal will bring us closer to the large one. For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. Hello! I'm a Berklee College of Music Alumnus with 20+ years playing experience! I started studying the saxophone at 9 years old and spent most of my early school years performing in community, school, and local college jazz bands around the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington State. My music has given me the opportunity to travel the world, and in summer of 2016, I conducted a tour of Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda with my band the AfroXchange in conjunction with music therapy organization Global Youth Groove where I hosted jazz masterclasses, as well as performed at clubs and festivals, and assisted a music therapy team around the countryside.
