Regardless of which direction the student wishes to take their musical development, a foundation of classical training is mandatory. I set realistic goals for each student depending on their starting point. Assessing where each student is with their playing is the most important aspect of teaching. The first lesson is always about providing a safe relaxed tone and finding out where that student's progress is. Not establishing an accurate assessment of their progress can be very destructive because it could cause me to come off as either too demanding or condescending.
