I have very high standards for teaching. That is why I did not start teaching until my fourties. At that point I felt that I had both the life experience and skills to be a good teacher. There is a lot more to playing music than just playing the right notes. That is what I call the mechanics of music but the not the soul.Obviously you must start with the basics to get to any deeper level of expression. That is what I am most passionate about. Why does anyone want to play an instrument? Instruments: Piano Voice Flute Clarinet

Often lesson styles are easy going to serve the interests of beginning students, and more demanding for advanced students. Libby writes out lesson plans for all her students according to what she and the student think is appropriate for the student's present acheivement. Libby presents sections on rhythm, tone, reeds-how to adjust them, how to make them etc--she finds music that she thinks the student will like after discussing it with the student. Read More

I really began teaching when I was in high school and then going into college. During high school I was discovered by different middle school and elementary school music teachers and asked to come teach their students. As I began working at different schools, I was asked to give private lessons. I taught beginner masterclasses, private lessons, and traveled to different schools for about two years. In 2017 I was offered a visual and musical teaching position with the Grants Pass Highschool Marching Band. Read More

Instruments: Flute

I welcome students of all ages and abilities into my studio. Lessons are structured around the student’s goals, whether to play professionally or as a hobby. Stylistic choices in musical expression and phrasing are taught by incorporating music theory, music history, and ear-training skills into lessons. Students learn to produce a beautiful tone and to express themselves freely. As an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher, I firmly believe that the psychophysical mechanism is paramount to success in healthy music-making. Read More

Instruments: Guitar Flute Ukulele Piccolo Electric Guitar

For all of my students, I try to incorporate a sense of body awareness and finding ways of learning that are the most comfortable and fitting for their specific needs. I believe strongly in practicing efficiently and relaxed.  For beginning flute students, I am to work on developing a sound, using Trevor Wye's Omnibus Books 1-5 and my own long tones: later moving on to scales and basic short pieces and etudes. What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
One of my proudest musical accomplishments is becoming an artist in my own right. This journey has involved not just honing my technical skills but also developing my unique voice and style as a musician. I take great pride in my ability to connect with audiences through my performances and share the joy of music with others. Additionally, I've been fortunate to perform with renowned orchestras, such as the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and to have the opportunity to teach and inspire students in their musical journeys. Each of these experiences has contributed to my growth as an artist, and I am excited to continue evolving and sharing my passion for music with the world.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes, I had a remarkable teacher who profoundly inspired my musical journey. My flute instructor during my undergraduate studies not only possessed incredible technical skills but also had an infectious passion for music that was truly captivating. She encouraged me to explore my creativity, emphasizing the importance of emotional expression in performance. Her personalized approach to teaching made me feel seen and valued as a student. She took the time to understand my unique interests and challenges, which helped me build confidence and find my own voice as a musician. Witnessing her dedication to her students and her ability to connect with each one on a personal level motivated me to pursue music not just as a career but as a way to inspire and uplift others. Her guidance has influenced my teaching style today, as I strive to create that same supportive environment for my students.

When will I start to see results?
The timeline for seeing results varies from student to student, as it largely depends on individual practice habits, commitment, and prior experience. Generally, you can expect to see initial improvements within a few weeks, especially if you consistently practice and engage with the material. Many students notice enhancements in their sound, technique, and confidence after about one to two months of regular lessons. As you continue to progress and challenge yourself, the results will become more noticeable, such as mastering new pieces, improving your tone quality, and developing your musical expression. Remember, progress in music is a journey, and celebrating small achievements along the way is essential for maintaining motivation and enthusiasm!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is excited about learning music, that’s a great indicator that they’re ready! Generally, children around ages 8 to 10 and at least 4 feet tall (48 inches) are often prepared to start flute lessons. Their enthusiasm and interest are key signs that they will engage with the material and enjoy the learning process!
