For beginning students I typically start with Hannon and my own finger exercises. I ask the the student to draw notes on a staff so they can get familiar with reading and composing music. All students from beginner to advanced, are given warm up exercises and recommended pieces to play . After 30 years of teaching piano, organ and flute ,I have written my own lesson books series. There are two basic method books for beginners, and comprehensive, themed books for advanced players that focus on Tone, Technique, Articulation, Intonation, Vibrato, Breathing, and Scales. Over the years, my students have consistently placed high in the Western Region Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Orchestra, and several of them have gone on to the extremely competitive Connecticut All-State Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Orchestra. Four of my students have successfully auditioned for the summer program at Interlochen. I have had two of my high school aged students have gone on to Harvard, one to Amherst, and three to Yale - all of whom played in the Yale Concert Band, Yale Jazz Ensemble, and/or Yale Symphony Orchestra.
